Regret an old piece? Most tattoos can be covered — but not all, and not by just anyone. Here is what actually makes a cover-up work, and how to start one.

## Most can be covered — with the right plan

A cover-up is not a do-over; it is a new design built to absorb the old one. Whether yours will work comes down to a few things — size, how dark and old the existing ink is, and the style going over it. Send a clear photo and I will tell you honestly what is possible before you commit to anything.

## What makes a cover-up work

### Size

The new piece almost always has to be bigger. A cover-up needs room to work around and absorb the old design, so the replacement is generally larger than what is underneath.

### Darkness & age

Faded, older tattoos cover far more easily than fresh, dark ones. Heavy black or fully saturated work may need lightening before a clean cover-up is possible.

### Color strategy

Covering usually means going darker. Black & grey and rich, deep colors hide old ink well; light, pastel, or fine-line work rarely will on its own.

### Subject & style

Organic, high-contrast designs with depth — florals, animals, blackwork, realism — hide an old outline far better than geometric or fine-line pieces.

### Placement & skin

Where it sits and how your skin held the original both shape what is possible. A clear, recent photo in good light tells me most of what I need to plan it.

## Sometimes you need laser first

Not every tattoo can be covered in one pass. If the existing work is too dark or too dense, a few sessions of laser lightening first — not full removal — will give you a far better result than forcing it. I will tell you straight what is realistic. I would rather turn a cover-up down than put my name on a muddy one.

## Can any tattoo artist do a cover-up?

Most will take the booking. Fewer will tell you no. A cover-up is not a fresh tattoo — you are designing around something that is already there, and the old ink keeps voting on the result long after the session ends. That means reading what is underneath, planning value and darkness around it, and being straight with you when the answer is laser first.

The tell is simple: ask what they would turn down. An artist who says yes to every cover-up has not looked at yours closely enough. I have been tattooing since 2015 and take one client a day, working in realism and black & grey — the styles that actually absorb an old outline. If yours is not a project I can do well, I will say so, and tell you what would work instead.

### Can any tattoo be covered up?

The same as any custom work here: $1,500 for a full session of 6–7 hours, with a $300 deposit that comes off that total, not on top of it.
