Start from the piece, not the palette
The right style is not a matter of taste alone — the subject, the look you want, and how a tattoo wears over the years all point toward an answer. I work in all three below; the style serves the tattoo, never the other way around.
Black & grey, color, mix

Black & grey
Built from black ink and its dilutions into grey. Quiet, timeless, and dramatic — it reads as depth and contrast rather than hue. Suits realism, portraits, religious work, and anything where shadow and form carry the piece. Ages predictably and holds its contrast well.

Color
Full saturation and hue. Vivid, bold, and eye-catching — color brings life to florals, animals, and illustrative or surreal work. It rewards healthy skin and good aftercare, and benefits most from sun protection to stay vivid over the years.

Mix
The two combined — a black & grey foundation with color where it earns its place. Used well, it directs the eye and gives a piece both depth and punch. Much of my large-scale work lives here, decided design by design.
